All my life I have been a cheerleader and it is my passion. I began cheerleading when I was five years old and I continue to cheer today.
Every year I would set a goal for myself in cheerleading. To achieve this goal, I would attend two gymnastics classes a week and also conditioning classes to stay in shape. Many times I would fall or get hurt but that never stopped me from cheering.
A few years ago I was in the air doing a stunt and on the way down no one was there to catch me. I fell to the ground and was in severe pain and broke my arm. I thought it would take me forever to get all of my skills back, since I had to take a few months off.
However, two months later I began to ease back into cheerleading. It was very painful for me but I went to physical therapy and worked hard to get back to where I was before the accident. This one event impacted the rest of my cheerleading years. From that day on, I feared going up in a stunt again.
However, I continued to cheer and stunt while trying the whole time to fight through my fears. At our first competition I became very apprehensive. I was afraid I might fall and injure myself again in front of the crowd. The nerves that spread all over my body began to make me sick. While I was competing I vomited on the mat.
It was extremely embarrassing and I wanted to give up cheerleading. I went to a doctor and he told me I vomited due to nerves and I was not breathing correctly. I did not know what to do but I knew I could not quit cheerleading. I loved cheerleading more than anything, so I continued to work through the struggles I was having.
I tried to relax for my next competition but the same incident occurred again. It was even more embarrassing the second time; I just wanted to give up. I never did though, and I continued to work hard and put all my time into figuring out ways to get myself to relax. I took a year off from competing and the following year I competed again and I made it through my routine.
I was very happy that I never gave up on my passion, my dedication and hard work paid off. This year I became a part of the Coastal Carolina cheerleading team, which was a huge accomplishment for me. If I did not work hard and stay dedicated I would have never made it through my cheerleading years. The fraternal bonds of combat have always been invoked to political ends.
